Looking out for each other during the summer
With the summer holidays here, it’s a great time for children to be out and about enjoying the longer days. As part of our community, it’s also a good moment to remind ourselves to help keep our neighbourhoods safe and supportive places for everyone, especially our youngest residents.
Safeguarding is something we all play a part in. If something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s always okay to speak up.
Worried about a child?
If you're concerned about a child or young person’s wellbeing, you can contact the police:
- 999 in an emergency
- 111 in non-emergency situations
Or, if you’d prefer to speak to us, we’re here to help. You can:
- email us at safeguarding@peaksplains.org
- Give us a call on 0800 012 1311
- Or fill out our online safeguarding form at the bottom of this page
Signs to look out for
- A child regularly appears hungry, tired, or in clothing that doesn’t suit the weather.
- Untreated injuries or signs of illness.
- Homes that seem very unsafe or unclean.
- Big changes in a child’s mood or behaviour, like fear, tiredness, or being withdrawn.
- Expensive new items (like clothes or phones) that are hard to explain
It’s also worth remembering that children can be at risk online.
If a child is suddenly secretive, avoiding people, or acting differently, it may be a sign something’s not quite right - the NSPCC can offer support and guidance.
Raising a concern, even a small one, could make a big difference.
